Want to teach cycling skills to kids in your area?

Velo NB, The National Cycling Centre - Atlantic and the Canadian Cycling Association are partnering to bring a community level introduction to cycling program to as many communities in New Brunswick as we can reach. The program is designed to introduce safe cycling skills to children aged 9 - 12 and can be taught by parents or community recreation staff as well as cyclists like yourselves. The course is called “Let’s Ride” and we are excited about the potential it has to teach children good safe skills as well as introduce them to the world of organized cycling.

We need two things for this to succeed - community liaison people and course instructors in many communities. Interested? We are looking to you to become involved in this program - your level of involvement could be up to you - from someone who teaches the course to the children in their local school or youth group up to the community learning facilitator ( you would teach others how to give the course).

This course is designed to be self supporting in terms of revenue and course instructors will earn a reasonable income for their time and effort.

The GO NB program has given their backing to this launch and we are excited about the possibilities. We have two opportunities for training to become involved in this program - May 7/8 in Dieppe or May 22/23 at the Atlantic Coaching Symposium in PEI.

Sound like something you’d like to be part of?? Get in touch with Sheila at velo.sheila@hotmail.com to get on board.

Sheila Colbourne, Executive Director of Velo NB wants you to know:

“For the third year running Velo NB is holding a mountain bike ride/safety clinic the week before the start of the Pepsi Cup in Dieppe. This has been a key way for us to make our presence known to the riders and their parents and an ideal time to introduce them to what we do. I usually talk to the parents while my skilled volunteers take the kids for some tours around the park - the idea is to help any of the newer riders overcome their fears of single track or other skills before the racing starts - once there are 50 - 70 kids riding all over the park it is hard to perfect a new skill!! I also like to do a brief bike and helmet check - the Pepsi Cup organization have a mechanic pit every night but sometimes if we can spot a problem the week before it is easier for the parents to get that sorted out before the first race.

So this year the clinic is set for April 28 - 5 pm to 8 pm - meet at the cycling centre.

So I need lots of you to come out and give a hand - the clinic runs from 5 - 8 in the Rotary Park - if you can’t come for the whole thing that’s okay - the kids especially like when the Pepsi Cup alumni are there to give them all their secrets!! However exemplary mountain bike skills are not required - just a friendly face to help check out the course before the chaos begins the next week - those of you who’ve done the Pepsi Cup circuit know what I mean! If you haven’t seen it; picture 150 kids from 9 -14 tearing around the parking lot and marshalling area plus assorted parents, grandparents, siblings and dogs thrown in there and you can see how a new kid might get a bit freaked out.

Let me know if you can make it”: velo.sheila@hotmail.com
