HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!!

21x12 wellness challenge holistic dietitian

…… and with the New Year often comes the resolution to get in better shape, eat better, get more sleep etc. Well, the 21×12 Wellness Challenge is a monthly program set up to help you achieve these goals in baby steps. No crazy revamping of your diet or lifestyle that is so extreme that after a few weeks it seems unmanageable.

Rebecca Bilodeau, the Holistic Dietitian, leads a monthly challenge for participants that tackles one aspect of introducing manageable, attainable and realistic health, nutrition and general wellness goals. Once  a month there is a meeting to introduce that month’s challenge, and ways to support it and things to avoid that aren’t aiding your overall health. From there participants have access to a password protected forum to log their daily results, see how others in the group are doing and a blog for questions, comments, encouragement etc.

The next meeting is taking place Monday February 1st - Find out more HERE!

Also, please feel free to visit Rebecca’s ‘The Holistic Dietitian’ site for information about her other private services and expertise by clicking HERE!

YMCA posterhey gals,

the YMCA is having their annual YMCA Spin-a-Thon on February 20th from noon until 5pm to raise funds for the YMCA international committee. Fitworks will have a women’s team of five represented at the Spin-a-Thon to help the cause.

Info from the YMCA website:

“The YMCA Spin-A-Thon is an event that invites teams and individuals to participate in a five hour bike ride using our indoor cycles.

Proceeds from this event support the activities of the YMCA International Committee.  Across our country, Canadian YMCAs work with YMCAs in lesser developed countries to help them achieve our shared goal of building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.

Currently there are about 30 active partnerships between Canadian and overseas YMCAs.  The Moncton Y has partners in Colombia and Honduras.

How does it work?

The first ride starts at noon – sharp!  We will have volunteers available to help people set up their bike.

One bike is provided per team

There will be a break every hour to allow team members to change up, but team members can change up more often if needed.  All team members, maximum of 8, must be on the team’s registration form and must have signed a waiver.

Instructors change every hour as well, so the engergy will be at a maximum!

Water bottles are mandatory… Towels will be provided!”

All those long training miles and hard sprints making you tight and stiff? Why not relax and soothe those sore muscles with a good massage?

If you don’t have a massage therapist already, we’d like to suggest Active Therapy Clinic. Sonia Picard and Nena Kennedy are both registered RMTs and have ample experience with cyclists and athletes. They are located at 298 Mill Road (just off Elmwood Drive), 389-9152

Nena has kindly provided Fitworks for Girls with an article highlighting the benefits of massage for cyclists. Click HERE to visit the article.

Here’s a little background on Nena:

“Having been a member of various sports teams and seeing her teammates sidelined with injuries she took an interest in sports therapy and rehabilitation.  Nena studied kinesiology at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton and worked with the varsity women’s hockey team for a season.  She accumulated a lot of experience working with a team, preparing athletes’ for games and treating injuries.  After completing her BScKin, Nena went on the study massage therapy at the Atlantic College of Therapeutic Massage, also in Fredericton.  During her studies at ACTM, Nena spent many hours working with varsity and recreational athletes and completed her certification in sports massage.  For the past two years Nena has been working in Moncton at Active Therapy Clinic as a registered massage therapist and she is an instructor and clinic supervisor at the College Atlantique de Massage Therapeutique in Dieppe.  She has volunteered at the CIS men’s hockey championships and national squash championships in Moncton over the past two years.  She has also worked with the Universite de Moncton’s women’s volleyball and men’s hockey teams and with national cyclists and paracyclists at several tours and training camps. Working with athletes is her passion and she could not see herself doing anything else!”
